FALLING FROM HIGH PLACES

to begin with was he the English gentleman
whom she at first believed
to be so outrageously polite,
she telling him that perhaps he was the type of person
that might have pushed her
the time she told him about
all the different ways she would like to die,
how beautiful she was when she smiled
and said how she wasn't afraid of heights,
how much uglier she looked when she smiled
and said how she'd make such a lovely sight
but then he found that quality in her eyes,
that laughter she sometimes tried to hide;
he thought she was only trying to scare him
he never thought she would do anything more than this
the time she told him about
all the different ways she would like to die.
